There are two tools that I want to use more with my kids this next year, YouTube and Flipgrid.

YouTube

YouTube is a wonderful tool to use for many, many reasons. In my school, K-2 teachers don't utilize videos in this way. So when they come to me in 3rd grade, my kids are not used to having YouTube as one of their tools to learn. They have experienced it more at home and in that kind of setting. So when I give them their first video, I sometimes forget that it's a YouTube video and they all raise their hand and say, "Mrs. Marshall, this video is on YouTube, can I watch it?" One of the ways I want to engage my kids more is having to make sure they're watching something that will interest them. Kids will watch videos over and over again. Which is a great thing! That means it's holding their attention for that long and they are learning the content. I want to make sure they are watching quality videos that they will get something from. I want to utilize making a playlist for them so they can have that content there whenever they want/need it.

This is kind of a side note...I did Flocabulary with my kids this year. They liked the videos and the assignments that went with it. What surprised me the most, was they were going to Flocabluary, getting on a song, and having that play in the background while they were working on other things. I thought this is a great way to have them engaged in not only the assignment that they were supposed to be working on but also the rap song in the background. That is what we as adults do, but I thought it was clever of them to figure that out. So I need to make sure they know that is something I'm am fine with them doing!

Flipgrid

I love Flipgrid, kids love Flipgrid, I just need to make it work for me! Kids are so engaged when I assign them something. I asked this before, how do I get them to respond without it taking 30-40 minutes? I give them a one minute thirty-second response time and it takes them 30 minutes??? I get they need to take the best selfie, pick the right stickers, and look as cool as possible. But sheesh! My goal this year is to make it meaningful! For me, I get to see what they know and for them, they get to show me what they know.

I worked in my classroom today and I'm getting excited for the school year to start!

3 Ways I Want to Improve What I do, Digitally

I've been thinking a lot about what kinds of things I do with tech in my room. There is a laundry list of apps, website, and tools I use. I would like to look at three things and see if I can become a better facilitator for my kids.

1. The first thing is to have content delivered to them in a meaningful way. Not just the content that I want them to know but how they are going to get it. It seems a bit confusing as I write it, but essentially I want them to have a digital version of my lesson plans. Maybe I give it to them in a daily or ongoing HyperDoc. But it would have what we are doing for the day, CCSS listed so they know what is being expected from them and myself, the purpose of why we do what we do. I want my 3rd graders to have to know we do this fun thing because we are supposed to be learning this standard. Then we can have conversations around that.

2. At times I will give them this fabulous tool to use. They will get to play with it and do a fun activity at first to learn the ins and outs of how to use it. Then I will give them the "real" assignment and I don't feel like they are using the tool with creative abandon like they did in the practice activity. I feel like kids should have this freedom to learn how it comes naturally and find what bests works for them, but maybe I should focus on what I expect from the assignment. The question I want to focus myself in answering is, are you giving them the right tool for the assignment? Something to really think about in the next 6 weeks of vacation.

3. Because I have many things for the kids to do online, I want to make sure I am using my time wisely. When I had my 30+ kids last year online doing an assignment, I thought about kicking my feet up and just watching them work. But I know I can better use my time and help some of my struggling kids. I keep thinking back when I took a HyperDoc class from Sarah Landis, Kelly Hilton, and Lisa Highfill they kept saying that the HyperDocs were meant for intervention. A way that kids can work at their own pace while giving teachers time to pull kids who need help. I want to make sure I am mindful of what I am doing while my kids are on their tech.

I was very lucky to get invited to FallCUE this year as a panel member to talk about BreakoutEDU. One of my favorite things to talk about with other educators! We had a fun time doing a mini game of Spyder Heist and talking about how the games can enhance our lessons.

My friend and colleague +Knela Newton asked me if I was going to go to the special session by author Dave Burgess. I had heard of his book and Knela was going so I signed up. I am so happy I did. Dave Burgess was the best part of CUE!!! He gave us strategies that will interest the kids. We are all creative, no matter what we think. One of my favorite strategies was the hook, put something in a bag, box, your pocket and tell the kids you will tell them all about it then move onto something else. Keep doing it until you build their excitement. You need to create moments that your kids will remember. Creating experiences and moments they will remember for the rest of their lives is part of being a teacher.

I tried this strategy today and they kids loved it. They were begging me to tell them what was in the bag. I got to tell them my story of becoming the first place winner in the Chrome Warrior CUE challenge. It was a tale of perseverance and encouraging friends.

I look forward to reading Teach Like A Pirate and implementing the strategies. Thank you Knela for suggesting we go to see Dave Burgess. It's a little weird. Instead of saying goodbye to kids I'm saying goodbye to fellow coaches. My life as an instructional coach is one day away from ending. It's been an amazing year and I have learned so much. I am so grateful for the experiences I have had this year.

It's time to go back to the classroom next year and make new experiences with my new grade level and new school. I'm heading to Pine Grove, where it all started for me. When I moved to Brookings I got a couple of long-term substitute jobs at Pine Grove. The ladies there were very sweet and took me under their wings. So I'm heading back there to teach 3rd grade.

I can't wait to use what I've learned my kids. I went to two CUE events RockStar and Palm Springs. I have learned Green Screen, BreakoutEDU, robots, augmented reality, HyperDocs, GLAD strategies for technology...just to name a few! I'm also looking forward to sharing what I've learned with the other teachers at Pine Grove.

I don't regret being an instructional coach, I just think I was made to be in a classroom full of kids.

I can't believe how long it's been since I've posted anything. I have been so busy with helping my 2nd and 3rd grade teachers, which is a good thing! Let me tell you about what I've been doing...it's called BreakoutEDU. If you have seen me around your campus the kids might point to me and say, "Hey, it's the Breakout lady." I've become a bit famous for breakouts. So breakouts are a way to gamify your standards. It goes a little like this, you pick a standard you are working on and think of ways kids can open locks using their knowledge about that standard. For example, my 3rd grade teachers decided to do a GLAD unit on magnets. I found different kinds of magnets, YouTube videos, games, and puzzles and created clues the kids could solve to open the locks. I've also created a local Del Norte County Social Studies game for the 2nd graders. They are learning about the people who supply us with our goods and services like our local farms, dairies and fisheries. I love #BreakoutEDU it has changed my way of teaching. I have to confess, I really enjoy playing breakout games with other educators. I have had the pleasure of introducing BreakoutEDU to Smith River and Mary Peacock teachers. They got to play a game with their staff to see the benefits of gamifying their student's learning. I have had the opportunity to facilitate breakouts with 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes. Here are a few examples of the games...
One of the reasons why I took my Coaching job, is that I get to learn so much. From different training's I get to attend, to watching teachers teach, to collaborating with teachers, there is so much to learn.

2016 is going to be here in a matter of days, and the new year is always a good time for new learning. +Rae Fearing is a Google Certified Educator/Trainer/Innovator, you name it she is amazing with Google. I would like to be a fraction as good as she is. So my goal for 2016 is to start my training as a Level 1 Google Educator. My first step is to meet with Rae and see what I'm in for. I'm ready and can't wait to learn, but also share what I've learned.
It's a powerful reminder that we need to think about and reflect upon our teaching practice. The things we were taught are not the things we teach our kids. As an Instructional Coach, I'm trying to #MakeSchoolDifferent by guiding teachers and helping them with technology. For some teachers technology is very foreign and not a comfortable topic. For others, it's old hat and they use it often. My job is to help teachers get out of their comfort zone, push the ones that are comfortable and guide the ones that aren't. Their students will benefit greatly.

I feel like I've never had it easy when it comes to getting a job as a teacher. At the time I got my credential, there wasn't a teacher shortage like there is now. I had to sub for 5 years before I got my job. In the meantime, my temporary credential was expiring because California expects you to get your job by then. I learned a lot of patience in those years.

Fast forward 5 years, I have taught 4th grade for 4 years and currently I'm an Instructional Coach for 2nd and 3rd grades. I love my job, and I never take it for granted because I had to work so hard to get it.

My advice for students wanting to become teachers is to make sure you realize you will never be 100% ready. Each year you teach is a learning opportunity for you. Reflect on what you think went well and what you think you could improve on. There is always something that could go better or smoother. Know that it's OK to say, "WOW, that lesson did not go as I thought it would." You can plan and prepare forever, but you will never predict how a lesson will go. The best thing you can do is reflect on why it didn't go as planned. Don't be afraid to admit that you might have been the problem for the lesson tanking. Teaching is all about reflection, learning and improving.

Have an open mind when it comes to listening to what other teachers have to say.

Soak up all the in class experience you can get.

Try all different grade levels. I never thought I would love 4th grade as much as I do.

You have a big job to do. Never take it for granted.

Always keep learning and improving your craft.

Have FUN!

I love being able to create a document and then have the ability to share it with someone. It is easy to use, kid friendly, and so convenient. I use it everyday.

Email is also equally amazing. I can communicate with lots of different people at a push of a few buttons. It comes in handy when I want to send quick reminders, check in with a teacher or chat with past students.

Whether you have a phone, tablet, iPad or laptop, you have the world at your fingertips. Made it through our GLAD training and we have hit the ground running. With the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) on the horizon, GLAD comes at a perfect time. It gives us an idea on how to tackle those standards without adopted text books.

I'm excited to help teachers implement the strategies they have learned. Although I do not have a class of my own, there is one thing I can take back to the classrooms I visit right away. I am going to make myself a BIG set of literacy reinforcements. Literacy reinforcements are cards with academic language, a definition, and a picture to match the word. They are used to reinforce good behavior. I will let the kids know there is a full set they can collect from me. My hope is to come into rooms and kids want those cards to be the first student to collect them all!Angie Marshallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14024495890203643365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2634863413252225198.post-66231617191539049802015-10-22T15:01:00.000-07:002015-10-22T15:01:12.461-07:00BeGLAD Training

Our district mandated that all the 2nd and 3rd grade teachers attend BeGLAD training. #BeGLAD is Guided Language Acquisition Design. In my opinion, BeGLAD is amazing strategies to use with kids. My 2nd and 3rd grade teachers had to make sub plans for 6 days and be prepared to be out of their classrooms. I know it is very stressful for them to be away from their kids for so long. We also have a shortage of substitutes, so that was something else on their mind.
I have 5 pages of notes on the training so far and it's only the first day. Our trainers have been very entertaining, engaging, and have made learning fun! What a concept that is?! Thank you Jabbar and Noshaba! I think teachers will think this training is worth the stress of being away from their kids for 6 days. I know they will have SO many different strategies to use with their kids when they get back.
I had the privilege to attend a CUE RockStar Teacher Camp this summer. Honestly I wasn’t sure what to expect when I signed up. I knew I needed technology and we would be having small class sizes. Both of those things appealed to me. CUE RockStar was a 3 day workshop where I got to learn all kinds of amazing things. I attended a Robotics class, ThingLink app/photo collage class, learned new ways to communicate with the teachers I will be working with, dove deeper into Google Forms and Info-graphics. And those were just some of the classes that were offered. I also got to network with many other teachers from different districts. I also realized that I could actually teach some of these classes. I am super excited about that prospect. I am shy and I secretly love to get up and teach. When I’m teaching kids the fear goes away and I become a different person. I love that confident person and I crave more of her. So the idea of teaching this kind of technology to other teachers is pretty cool.

From one of the classes I attended, we made a ThingLink that showcased what I did and learned. I attended the Robotics class and made a rubber band car. We experimented with different wheels and lengths of rubber bands to see if they made a difference in how fast they traveled. I found out that I made a pretty quick little car! All the changes I made to the car, made it slower. So I changed it back! Now that school has started back up, I going to set up a time with a teacher to come in her class and make these cars with the kids. They are 2nd graders and they are the perfect age to experiment with this kind of Robotics.

I also got to use the Pic Collage app to help me create my ThingLink. We did a photo walk and picked out different objects to make the word CUE. This would be a great way to get kids thinking creatively and up out of the classroom. They could do a pic collage on the habitat of the wildlife around the school, different numbers they see around the campus, or anything they can think of.

I loved the refresher class on Info-graphics. I enjoy looking at data and making an info-graphic is a fun and creative way to do that. Last year a made an Info-graphic that reflected my students’ DIBELs scores. The kids liked seeing how much they improved, and I could show that in a fun way. While I was at CUE RockStar, I made one for Instructional Coaches. It needs some tweaking, but I think I would like to share it with my teachers one day.

I got to learn so much and I’m very grateful for that. I’m looking forward to attending another CUE conference in the future.

The start of this school year is different than every other school year since I've become a teacher. Yesterday I wasn't busy getting my classroom ready for new 4th graders. I was busy checking on teachers to see if there was anything I could do to make their day or start of the year any better. I am the new Instructional Coach for 2nd & 3rd grade teachers in Del Norte County. I met with 16 of my teachers yesterday, they were all in good spirits ready to start the year off. I am so excited and honored to work with a group of talented, creative, caring, and dedicated teachers. I can't wait to work with them and secretly I can't wait to learn from them. They have such a wealth of knowledge that I want to tap into.

So to all the teachers who are starting school on Monday, good luck! You are appreciated more than you will ever know.

Our Open House was last Wednesday and the kids got to showcase their #GeniusHour learning. I had a fantastic turn out of parents who showed up to support their child. Not only did we have parents, we had grandparents, aunts, uncles and people who wanted to see what all the commotion was stop by and listen to my kids present on their Genius Hour projects. I am so proud of the work my kids did.

I have the pleasure of presenting my experience of Genius Hour to my 2nd and 3rd grade teachers on Tuesday. The plan is to have a whole grade level participate in Genius Hour next year. It was opened up to grades K-6 and I am really hoping my 2nd or 3rd grade teachers decide to do it. I really want to support them next year. On Thursday I get to present it to the School Board. I hope they are as inspired as I am.

I just want to say a HUGE thank you to +Rae Fearing and +Charlene Knowlton. Without them to calm me down and reassure me I don't think it would have been as big a success as it was. So thank you ladies, and I look forward to working with you next year to calm someone else down!

My kids have been doing some incredible learning. They have been meeting with lots of people from our community. I have to say, Crescent City has some welcoming and helpful people in it. I am very grateful to many people this week. First off, Northwoods welcomed to of my boys, Luis and Westyn, into their kitchen to let them see what being a chef was like. Chef Frank was so gracious with them, they got to make pasta, tour the kitchen and interview him. Dr. Caldwell made time to meet with one of my girls. She wants to become a doctor. Dr. Caldwell met with Judith and she got to interview him and tour his office.
Our goal last week was to revisit our Essential Questions. It was important to me to remind the kids what they were researching and to go back to the whole point of Genius Hour. They also looked at each other's questions and made comments or asked more questions. It was powerful to them, I could tell they really thought about what they asked each other.
We have made several connections in the community for interviews and mini field trips and everyone has been gracious and helped us out. I am so excited for these kids. I really wish I could go on a field trip too. I hope they know how special this is.

Please check out their blogs posts! They would LOVE it if someone besides their classmates and their teacher comment on their posts.

Here are my 5 things we have to stop pretending in education.

1. Teachers can do everything on their own.
This probably has more to do with the teacher themselves, but I know that I want to do everything on my own. But I can't and I need help, not just someone to make copies for me, but to help me learn and grow as a teacher. I'm almost 5 years into this profession and I am STILL trying to figure everything out. I don't believe teachers who have been teaching for 20 or more years have it figured out.

2. If teachers attend Professional Development they will take it back into the classroom and use it right away.
I'll be honest, I have attended a lot of professional development, but I haven't used half of what I have learned. Like my kids, I need to be shown how to do things. If I get to participate and really understand what is being taught there is a greater likelihood I will take what I learned back to my classroom. But there also needs to be a follow-up to see if I need any assistance. What I think will be great about my PLC Coaching job is that I get to be the one to follow-up and help out. It's one thing to expect a teacher to implement something without support, it's another to provide that support.

3. Your text book will cover all your standards.
Now that we are moving towards the Common Core, our text books are not the end all be all. There are many standards you will have to go elsewhere to find and cover. I would love a magical book that has everything I need, but it's not out there and teachers need to realize that.

4. Just because I don't know anything about technology, doesn't mean my kids don't either.
I have jumped on the technology bandwagon and ran with it. I have been trying so many things lately that I didn't even know existed. Some of them I liked myself and others I didn't care for. But all of them my kids loved! I understand there are teachers who don't know how to use technology, but these kids do! It's hard to not be in total control of a situation, but it's good for you and it makes you learn new things.

5. You have to do the same thing all day, everyday.
I realize kids need consistency, I am a HUGE advocate for it. But education is changing everyday and you as a teacher need to change with it. There are so many different things kids can be doing to show their understanding, engaging and fun things!

This was really hard for me to come up with. I know I'm learning all the time to be a better teacher for my kids. I feel like they have gotten a variety of educational experiences this year. There is always room to grow and get better!

Angie Marshallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14024495890203643365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2634863413252225198.post-19293948163285065892015-04-22T15:19:00.001-07:002015-04-22T15:19:26.241-07:00Oh...the Possibilities!!I can't tell you how exciting it was today in my classroom! My kids are starting to pick their Passion Projects for Genius Hour. For the last 5 school days, I have been giving them a question to answer/finish on a little piece of paper. Then I would post them under their name. These were the sentences I had them finish to help them think of ideas for their Passion Project.

1. I wonder...
2. I would like to learn how to...
3. If I could have any job in the world it would be...
4. The one thing this world needs is...
5. If I could visit anywhere it would be...

And here is what my wall looked like when we finished our questions. They really thought about their answers, but I think they loved listening to what the other kids wrote. I had forgot to read them one day, and I got so many questions as to WHEN I'm going to read them.

+Rae Fearing and +Charlene Knowlton came out today to help my kids think through their Passion Project ideas. We have some wonderful projects in the works. Their goal today was to pick a Passion Project and think of an essential question to drive their research. This was a hard task for some. They have so many ideas and to narrow their question down was hard for some of them. Once they picked their project and wrote an essential question they wrote it down on construction paper and I posted it on the wall in our classroom. The point of this was to think about their question and refer back to it. They can ask each other questions and I will put them up on the wall too. Just so they can see what other people are thinking and wondering about their projects.
If you don't know me...I'm a bit of a control freak, so this project is going to test me as a teacher. I am going to let the learning happen and see where this takes us. I know they will learn so much once this is over, but I just have to trust them...and breathe. Let the learning commence!

We got to do a Google Hangout with author J.B. Cantwell today. Jen has written a series of books called Aster Wood. They are about a sick boy who has adventures and travels to far off places. As a teacher what I found so interesting is that she talked about the writing process she goes through with each of her novels. 4th graders go through the writing process too, but for some reason they think they are "finished" with a story without making any changes to it. :-) Jen explained how she sends her drafts into her editor and they send back notes on how she needs to improve her story. I could go on and on how much I learned today talking to Jen. I was so inspired by her! I hope my kids were too. They asked her some great questions and she was gracious enough to answer all of them. Please visit her website at J.B. Cantwell. Thank you +Jen Cantwell for talking to my kids!Angie Marshallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14024495890203643365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2634863413252225198.post-30681700559163076952015-04-15T19:56:00.000-07:002015-04-15T19:56:42.006-07:00Planting a SeedToday I planted a seed, I don't have a garden, but I do have 4th graders and they can be similar. The seed I planted was Genius Hour. My kids this year are yearning for knowledge, they want to know more. Way more knowledge than I can provide. I have been interested in Project Based Learning and this is a great way to try it out. For the next week, we will be thinking about what kinds of things they want to explore. If you asked any adult what they would spend 20% of their time on each week you would get all kinds of answers. I can't wait to see what they come up with! I will keep you posted. I am looking forward to this new adventure with my kids as the school year comes to an end.Angie Marshallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14024495890203643365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2634863413252225198.post-3849318358334305632015-04-11T12:36:00.000-07:002015-04-11T12:36:43.871-07:00Learning...in the Digital Age

My class Teaching in the Digital Age is over, yet I feel like my journey has just begun. I didn't imagine when I started this class I would learn so much. I really didn't know what I was in for. But I know now that I have this hunger for kids to have technology in their hands and for them to have options on how they want to show me what they know. It's opened my eyes to so many possibilities that my kids would have never knew existed if I hadn't wanted to learn more myself. I think our kids reap the benefits every time we learn something new and get excited about teaching. We need to be in a place where we are willing to take some risks with lessons and technology.

Two standards stick out as areas of strengths, student learning and creativity and professional growth and leadership. I have really gave my kids the "OK" to be creative in their learning and presentations to me. I think it's so important, especially with technology, to not put so many limitations on what the kids can and cannot do...as long as it's within reason. I have a new role coming up next year and I really think this benefited me by showing me what kids can do so I can be helpful in showing other teachers what they can do with their kids. I think I will always be working on Digital Citizenship. It's like teaching them how to be good people. It's a full time ongoing job.

I have already been applying what I have learned in my class with my kids. They LOVE it when I teach them a different technology tool. I also want to make sure I keep everything I learned close, to show my teachers next year. I am looking forward to what the future holds. I'm excited for new opportunities and getting to working with some talented people. Keep following me to see what clever things my kids come up with. They love it when I share their work!Angie Marshallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14024495890203643365noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2634863413252225198.post-62594401213356488732015-04-10T13:17:00.000-07:002015-04-10T13:17:11.351-07:00Earth Day Sketchnotes...

Well, here are some WONDERFUL sketchnotes made by my creative class. We have been learning about Earth Day, The Triplicate gave our class the Earth Day supplement and we read the articles and then made sketchnotes about what they read.

Rae Fearing is always challenging me to do different things with technology and I love her for that. She challenges me, I figure out how to do it and most of the time things work out. I feel compelled to follow through and complete these tasks. It's nice that I feel comfortable to try these new things, I think that is key for me and my kids.
